The Climate Group is working to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by assembling a leadership coalition of the world’s most pro-active companies, cities, states and governments. We focus on showing that solutions to prevent the worst impacts of climate change already exist and that many leaders have in fact found it profitable to implement them. The Climate Group has created NorthSouthEastWest as a way of demonstrating the far-reaching effects of global warming and to highlight the essential work that is already being undertaken around the globe to reduce emissions and to rise to this, the most important challenge of our generation. |

The British Council started in 1934, to make ‘the life and thought of the British peoples more widely known; and to promote a mutual interchange of knowledge and ideas’. In 2005, cultural relations are more relevant than ever, helping to bridge divides. The Council now works in 220 towns and cities in 110 countries, reaching tens of millions of people. In 2005 and 2006, we are running ‘ZeroCarbonCity’, a series of actions that include collaborating on NorthSouthEastWest, aimed at reframing the international climate change debate by exploring the energy challenges facing the world’s greatest cities. Cities occupy a pivotal position as major energy consumers, but also as centres of innovation and new thinking. International links can be built between cities, even when states cannot agree. ZeroCarbonCity shifts the emphasis away from climate change impacts and inter-governmental negotiations, towards mitigation, adaptation, and practical measures that people can adopt. In so doing, it raises awareness internationally of the UK as a country committed to tackling the problems. |
