Nikos Economopoulos
Nikos Economopoulos was born in Peloponnisos, Greece. He studied law in Parma, Italy, and worked as a journalist for Greek daily papers and magazines for many years. In 1998, he abandoned print journalism to devote himself to documentary photography, spending the next two years travelling through Greece and Turkey.
In 1994 he became a full member of Magnum Photos and completed his book “In the Balkans” published in 1995. Other projects have included “Poverty and Exclusion in Europe”, depicting stories of Greek gypsies.
Working mainly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Nikos covered numerous stories depicting the human condition, involving the displaced, the minorities, the victims, the illegal immigrants and the indigenous. He also completed his 15 -year long personal project in Turkey.
In 2001 he received the Abdi Ipektsi award, for peace and friendship between Greek and Turkish people. In 2002 he completed a book project on Preveza, the city where he lives with his family.
