IT LOOKS LIKE WAR AND IT IS – ALTHOUGH THEY ARE NOT SOLDIERS BUT HEALTH WORKERS FUMIGATING THE STREETS OF KOLKOTTA AGAINST THE NUMBER ONE ENEMY, THE MALARIA MOSQUITO. INCREASING TEMPERATURES SPEED UP PARASITE DEVELOPMENT IN THE MOSQUITO, INCREASING THE CHANCE OF TRANSMISSION.

I can not explain what I am feeling. It is horrible o dreadful. Oh, my God.

  2. Hai Lua Says:

    Hi,
I was wondering why these health workers were not covering their mouth and nose while spraying the chemical which I think can be toxic if breathed in directly?

    Thanks for reading.

i heard it was DDT speading in large quantity in all india for fighting malaria… Is that true?

  4. c.k.omprakash Says:

Hi, to irradicate malaria by poisonous gas, will it affect the human beings, instead of mosquitos!!!!!!!

  5. RamV Says:

    Hi guys,

I was living in india when they did similar things - the chemical they use isnt DDT - those people would be dead in a few steps if it was… including the photographer. The chemical they use is supposed to be harmful to mosquitoes and other insects - but harmless to humans.

It’s been 15 years roughly since I stood in a cloud of that same gas for around 10 - 15 minutes. A fair few houses (at the time and in the suburbs i lived in) didnt really bother with windows - they just have steel bars everywhere - so all the houses in the neighbourhoods got gassed as well.

Great pic, reminds me of the “Alien” movies, the hunters entering the monster’s lair.

  7. manikandan Says:

    hi friends,
Why fungimating like this also causes air pollution?Won’t it affect the environment?why cant they use eco-friendly methods for fighting mosquitos?

  8. jote Says:

I really do not think there could be any kind of fumigation which is totally harmless to humas. The main point is that even though small amout of the chemical are tolerable for mammals (including humans), a lager contration is still dreadful. The workers who are appliying the product are all-day exposed to the gas, so I would be very interested about what happend to them ten years from now, or even if there will be some genetical alteration in their kids.

    regards

we are about to make humans extinct and some of you are worried about breathing fumes.we have been a plague to the earth and deserve exactly what we get.

  10. David Says:

I am pretty sure that they are spraying DDT. It is not lethal to humans, only causes reproductive problems. It is the main weapon agains malaria.

  11. Smita Pradhan Says:

The spraying exercise is not the solution, since in the first place we do not know what is being sprayed?

People have to take the initiative and the government needs to adopt a participatory approach. Only then, we can find a solution to this problem

  12. samii Says:

it is about time we should start growing the wood for making house with treated wood for fireretardend .

that is you do not need cement, bricks etc. for better eco aspect

  13. Jaidev Says:

DDT has been banned everywhere else in the world ( as far as i know), because its not bio-degradable and keeps accumulating in the food-chain. Worst affected are the birds. Their eggshells become so thin that they break before the egg is hatched. DDT ought be replaced with something else.

  14. Harry D Says:

They should shoot mosquito with AK47.

Wake-up now to save our nature and health otherwise in the course of time it will badly effect the entire evolution. Please start doing Mass awareness about global warming and how to prevent epidemic deases. Let us try to see a healthy tommorow.
