“The interactions between climate and health are complex, and we can make only approximate estimates of the extent to which global climate change has affected disease in the past, or will do in the future. But our current knowledge suggests that climatic changes since the 1970s may already be causing over 150,000 deaths annually and that if left unmitigated, greenhouse gas emissions will increase disease burdens in the coming decades. This does not mean that we are powerless to respond. Choosing sustainable development paths can help protect us from the effects of a changing climate, while simultaneously addressing many of our greatest current health concerns.”
